LDS Scriptures – How to Use Them in Primary

broken image

It is probably tricky to use scriptures, especially in primary, because of its unfamiliar language. The scriptures have larger words which children find quite difficult to pronounce. Besides, children do not have a uniform level of comprehension. But, there are methods that can help you to connect with every child through the scriptures. You can get more details in this link.

Before jumping to the scriptures, you can first write the difficult words on the chalk board. Then, ask them whether they know the meaning of those words and assist them in defining those words. When the meaning of the words has been given, provide examples of every word or narrate a story and tell them why those words are significant.

When communicating with younger children, you can try reading some words from the scripture. After that, ask them to repeat those words back. This gives them the opportunity to familiarize the words, particularly that most young children have not reached reading level yet.

Take hold of the scripture so that you can help the children to apply them to their personal lives. Ask them questions that are thought provoking. If you are dealing with older children, communicate with them like they are grownups and inform them that they will be picking up new things, which they've never encountered before. Pay attention to what they have to say and you are going to learn something new from them as well.

Give every child the chance to speak; you can ask each child inside the room personal questions that they will be able to respond to. This method is more effective among older children than the younger ones. A lot of younger children answer questions with great effort and are usually too ashamed to respond.

While not every child will remember the scriptures, however, it would be a good idea to let them memorize the scripture in the end. You can carry this out in parts. In case you do not want to finish off with memorization, perhaps you can return to some game. Hangman is used too often, so how about something creative such as word erasing, matching game or repetition. Games that are simple can help the primary learn scriptures the fun way.

A very important thing to do if you are educating children of primary age about the scriptures is by following the spirit. By doing this, you will be able to understand what each child needs. Through prayer along with personal study, you'll be ready to educate as well as influence the life of every child.
Practice is all it takes and, in no time, even the youngest sunbeams will start enjoying and learning about LDS scriptures.
